Warren G. Harding
Warren G. Harding was born November 2nd 1865 in
Corsica, Ohio. First he tried to be a teacher, then an insurance man, then a
reporter. However, in 1899 Harding was elected as Ohio State Senator. He served
for 3 years and then in 1903 he was elected Lieutenant governor of Ohio. After
this, in 1915 Harding became a U.S. senator from Ohio. He served until 1921
when he was elected president. Harding was nominated for the Republican Party
with his running mate Coolidge. He was opposed to Democrat James Cox. He easily
won the election with a 61% vote. Throughout his presidency he followed a
campaign which was “return to normalcy”. He said this because he was dedicated
to changing life back to the way it was before the war. However, Warren G.
Harding was seen as one of the absolute worst presidents in American History.
During his presidency there was an immense amount of scandals that his
appointees were involved in. For example senator Albert Fall, senator of the
interior, sold the right to an oil reserve in Teapot Dome, Wyoming. He sold it
to a private company in exchange for $308,000 and some cattle. He was caught
and sentenced to one year in jail. This was called the Teapot Dome scandal.
Even though Harding was not a good president he did in fact help keep America
out of the League of Nations. Sadly on August 2nd, 1923 Harding was
traveling around California and suffered a horrible Heart Attack. Harding then
passed away after serving as president for three years. Calvin Coolidge then
became president.

While Coolidge was in office he appointed a special counsel to investigate the Teapot Dome oil-lease scandal in which he dismissed Harding’s U.S attorney general. He gained the trust from his reputation for his honesty and integrity, which helped him, restore public faith. He ran for president in 1924 again and won. His policies continued being guided by his belief in private enterprise and small government. Coolidge cut taxes, limited government spending and stacked regulatory commissions with people sympathetic to business. He set high tariffs on imported goods to protect American industry. After his presidency term ended he announced he was not going to run again in the 1928 election. After he left he retired to Northampton and wrote memoirs and would contribute his political commentary to magazines. About less than a year since Coolidge had left office the stock market crashed and the economy plummeted into the great depression. He died at the age of 60 by a heart attack.
