Gertrude Stein
The Lost Generation was a group of famous writers in the 1920s.
This group of writers had no faith in American society. They wrote anti-war
books, which helped America get back into the ways of isolationism. In
addition, they discussed Americans who had abandoned post war values, and how
the war was pointless. Also, the idea of karma was long gone to these writers.
They didn’t believe that if you do well, you’d be treated well. That belief was
shattered during the war to them. The Lost Generation of writers criticized the
American culture and had no support for war. One of the most influential
writers of the time was Gertrude Stein, who actually came up with the phrase
“the Lost Generation”. Gertrude Stein was born on February 3rd, 1874
in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of three children and grew up
in California. In her later years, she attended Radcliffe College and studied
psychology. Then, she studied medicine at John Hopkins. However she did not
take a degree in either of these courses, but instead moved to Paris and lived
with her brother so that she could pursue a career in writing. She enjoyed more
modern ways of writing, not the old American ways. She wanted writing to have
just as much freedom as painting had at the time. Her first book, The Three
Lives, was published in 1909 and ever since she was influencing more and more
writers of The Lost Generation. On July 27, 1946, she died of inoperable
cancer; however her writings were still published. Her literature never
died.
